A Parent's Guide to Section 504 in the Public-School System
Participants will develop a conceptual understanding of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, a federal civil rights law which prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities. As a recipient of federal funds, public schools are required to provide students with disabilities equal access to educational programs, services, and activities. This session will review the definition of a disability under this section of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended, and how it differs from disabilities as defined under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Parents will also learn about the provisions and protections afforded to individuals who qualify as students with a disability under this federal civil rights law.
